Frequently Asked Questions

What is Metrowest?

Metrowest is a youth basketball organization in Massachusetts run by Mass Premier Courts in Foxboro, MA.  Metrowest is a competitive travel basketball program for towns in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

How long has BYBA been involved in Metrowest?

2022-2023 will be the 12th season Barrington has been participating in Metrowest. In our first year we placed 4 teams in the league and last season 16 teams (10 boys and 6 girls) played in the league. This year we hope to have even more!

What grade levels may participate?

BYBA is encouraging boys and girls in grades 3-8 to participate in player showcase to determine grade level team placement.

What is the cost of our program?

$400 per youth. The fee includes uniforms, practices, 12 regular season games, a tournament and Metrowest playoffs. Payment of fee is not required until teams have been determined.  Scholarships are available upon request please notify BYBA President, Kara Humm, at [email protected].

Please note there is a new 3rd Grade Division and that will be 8 regular season games and a cost of $325 per youth.

When are the games played?

Games are on Sundays starting the first week of December through February. Usually no games during Christmas vacation (but maybe after New Years) but there will be games during February vacation. There is a 12 game regular season schedule and playoffs for all teams will begin March 1st and end by March 11th.

Where are the games played?
Typically, teams will have 6 home and 6 away games.  Home games will be played at Barrington Middle School and Kickemuit Elementary School. The away games will be played in neighboring towns in the area of I-95 area of Massachusetts.

Please note that the 3rd grade only division will be all away games in neighboring communities in order to accommodate the 8.5 foot rims.

When and where are practices?
Teams will practice 2 weeknight evenings per week, with an opportunity to have a Saturday practice or an extra practice if desired. All practices will be held at St. Andrews, Barrington Middle School, Kickemuit Elementary School, and Bayview Academy.

Do all teams play in the same division of Metrowest?
No. Metrowest has six different division levels in each grade for boys and 4 for girls.  BYBA has the ability to place teams in the division we believe will allow for healthy competition, enjoyment, and development for our teams. There will be opportunities for some teams to play in higher divisions while other teams will play in lower divisions. Additionally, we can place teams in multiple divisions within the same grade level and make adjustments for playoffs.  This year the league is providing an opportunity to schedule more than the 12 regular seasons with teams that may be in different divisions.

Do you place all players on teams?

This year BYBA is working to increase the interest of youth basketball throughout the community, in anticipation of creating a recreational league next year for youth in Grades 3-8.  It is our decision, to not make cuts this season. We have created a player showcase to help evaluate and determine the placement of players on teams for each grade level.  The number of teams are dependent upon interest, attendance at player showcase, and volunteer coaches.

How does the team selection process work?
Youth will be evaluated at two separate player showcases by coaches in their grade level and a BYBA Board Member.  Showcases will be uniform for all grade levels with same drills, stations, and scrimmage. Youth will be evaluated on participation, sportsmanship, skills, game readiness, and coachability.

I've heard about RIYBA, is that different?
RIYBA is the RI Youth Basketball Association and Barrington Youth Basketball is a member of RIYBA.  RIYBA sponsors weekend tournaments around the state.  As members, BYBA teams can play in RIYBA tournaments at the discretion of individual coaches.  At this time we do not participate in the RIYBA regular season league. The RIYBA Board is revamping, so we may look to schedule more games with them in the future.
